There’s no chance you haven’t heard about smoothies – they are all the rage right now. These tasty, fruity and healthy drinks are supposed to give us energy in the morning. They seem like the perfect breakfast or snack and are easily prepared – just put the ingredients in a blender and it it’s done in a minute. However, not all smoothies are healthy and provide you with all the essential nutrients. Some contain lots of sugar (sweetened fruit juice, honey, bananas) while others contain too much fat (frozen yogurt). If you cut out the fats, you’re cutting on protein too. So here are some tips on how to make the perfect healthy smoothie!
Freeze your own fruit! Cut apples, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, apricots and whatever fruit you like in your smoothie to pieces, put them in a plastic bag and freeze them. This way you have it prepared every time you want to make a delicious smoothie.
Add some proteins in your smoothie. Dr. Frank Lipman explains that adding whey protein in smoothies as an easily digestible protein provides you with all the essential nutrients. You can also use low-fat yogurt or almond milk as a substitute for dairy.
Add coconut water instead of fruit juice to thin down your smoothie and make it more nutritious. Coconut water is rich in potassium and electrolytes and is really refreshing after a workout.
Use avocado as a banana substitute as they are full of essential vitamins and minerals and low on sugar. Avocados also contain antioxidants and fiber, making them an ideal addition to your smoothie. While high in fat, they contain linoleic and oleic acids, which can effectively lower the cholesterol levels. Besides all of this, avocados are the perfect snack food, and can easily keep the hunger at bay.
Sweeten your smoothies with care. Try agave syrup, which has a low glycemic index, but it’s still sweeter than honey. You will feel less hungry after your agave syrup smoothie.
